Just as memories and landmarks are significant with childhood. So too are flowers. The sun scent of gorse on the breeze or the first spot of harebells; taking me right back to Summer’s spent at the beach.

Roaming the machair in search of rock pools, their papery blue bells stood in stark contrast against the sharp grasses that stung my bare feet.

Harebells and bluebells are often associated with witchcraft. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the name derives from their tendency to grow where hares are seen.

It was believed that witches, in times of trouble could transform themselves into hares and hide amongst the flowers. The bells were then said to tinkle a warning when danger was near.

It was also said the juice of the crushed flowers was used in order to help witches fly.
